Man charged in fatal crash has prior conviction on his record

Some residents of Toronto may have heard about the recent hit-and-run incident that took place in Calgary. A 26-year-old man died at about 4 a.m. on Feb. 17 after having been struck by a vehicle near 40th Avenue North. The 25-year-old driver fled the scene of the auto-pedestrian accident at that time, but later returned to turn himself in. He has been charged with hit and run causing death.

GM North America recalling Cobalts, G5s

In a move that could affect car owners in Ontario, General Motors issued a recall of nearly 780,000 compact vehicles in North America because the ignition switch can unexpectedly turn off the car, which could lead to wrecks. It is believed that the lack of power shut off the power steering and power brakes and prevent the airbags from deploying. The auto manufacturer admitted that six people have been killed in five separate fatal motor vehicle accidents.

Man sentenced after Ontario hit-and-run accident

A 35-year-old man was sentenced to a prison term of three-and-a-half years after he admitted his role in a hit-and-run accident. The accident left a 10-year-old boy in a coma with severe brain injuries. The man’s wife is also facing an accessory after the fact charge in connection with the collision. She has also entered a guilty plea and was scheduled to be sentenced in March.

Pileup on Highway 401 involving more than 20 vehicles

Whiteout conditions may have contributed to a large pileup in the morning hours of Jan. 29 that temporarily closed an Ontario highway. The truck accident involved over 20 vehicles, and it took place on a three kilometre stretch of Highway 401 between Deseronto and Napanee.

Ontario accidents claim 3 lives

In what was listed as Toronto’s first traffic fatality of 2014, a 39-year-old woman died when a vehicle hit her as she walked across the street on Jan. 19. Authorities reported that a 19-year-old man was driving a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am near Northcliffe Boulevard and Eglinton Avenue West when his vehicle struck her at about 9:45 p.m. While police do not anticipate filing charges for the auto-pedestrian accident, they were still investigating the fatality at the time of the report.
